Unless you live in a cave in Africa, you've probably heard the uproar about the "Ground Zero Mosque" in New York. I haven't been able to escape the fearmongering imposed on the American public any more than any other American in Canada.
And it makes me wonder: when will we find a new target for our bigotry, ignorance, and arrogance? How long before we justify our prejudices against even more demographic groups, because of the actions of a handful of powerful extremists with a manipulative agenda?
9/11 was a terrible atrocity, and should not be forgotten. But neither should it be allowed to be used as the terrorists intended: to prove the point that Americans can be made to believe anything, and that Americans are evil, hateful, and need to lose our position of power because of our corruption.
James Standish said it well in his article in the Washington Post.
Keith Olbermann said it eloquently, too:
Let us never forget--9/11 is not the only part of our history to remember. This great nation was founded on principles powerful enough to stand the test of time and terrorism.
Let us never forget them.
